Mysore Style
Mysore Style is the traditional Ashtanga Yoga method of practice as established in the lineage of Shri K. Pattabhi Jois in the beautiful city of Mysore in Southern India.
This is a quiet practice space where the Ashtanga sequence is practiced at an individual pace, in a “one-on-one” style of instruction. Similar to a private lesson, but within a group setting.
The room is shared by practitioners of different levels, each moving through the sequence at the rhythm of their own breath, while the teacher offers individualised guidance and support.
Thanks to this personalised approach, Mysore Style is suitable for practitioners of all ages, levels, and conditions. The self-practice is built gradually; postures are learned one by one, and progression happens at an individual pace. This allows for deep study of the sequence and the development of a stable and grounded practice over time.
Entry to Mysore classes is flexible – for morning classes starting at 7:15, students may arrive until 8:30 and practice until 10:00, or according to the time available on that day.
In our experience, the magic of Mysore Style, in addition to the silence and unique atmosphere of the Mysore room, is the opportunity it gives practitioners to take responsibility for their own practice and to experience yoga profoundly through direct and honest exploration.
Led (Guided) Class
Twice a week, on Wednesday afternoons and Friday mornings, guided group classes are held. In these classes instruction follows a steady, unified rhythm, with all students practicing together in synchrony.
We practice the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga, with an emphasis on the vinyasa, the flow of movement connected to breath.
Practicing led classes also helps refine and reinforce the memorisation of the vinyasa count, as well as the transitions in and out of the asanas. It is an opportunity to move through the Primary Series sequence – standing, seated asanas, backbands inversions and closing asanas – finishing with pranayama, seated meditation, and Savasana (complete relaxation).
